What
is your idea of a perfect village pub?
Is
it an olde worlde building with oak beams, with a cosy interior and an open log fire? Is
it a quiet country pub where you can get a good plain tasty meal at a very reasonable
cost, accompanied by a glass of well
conditioned local cask ale?
Is
it a place where you may still play traditional games such as dominoes, darts, or chess
without the accompanying throb of juke box music or clatter of one-armed bandits? Is it a
place where your custom is valued and you are not just treated as a number?
Well,
the above is what we think village pubs should be all about, and it is what we have aimed
to achieve since we came here in 1993, and by and
large we like to think that we have more
or less got there. Along the way however a
number of features have evolved which were not wholly intentional. Firstly there is a
large collection of foreign currency notes displayed on the bar surround, and an even
larger collection of pigs which are everywhere in the pub-walls, floor, window sills, and
even suspended from the ceiling. Both these collections were basically accumulated by our
customers bringing items back with them from holiday. However should you ask Judy why she
collects pigs she will give you a typically feminist answer, which she considers is
humorous. Huh!
One
wall of the pub is covered with drawings made by the children of our customers. This
simply started because Judy provided paper and felt-tips to keep children happy while
Mums and Dads were having a chat, and the idea just grew and grew. We also
have an interesting collection of pub mirrors although we dont have too many as they
are terrible to keep clean!
In
the summer quite a few tourists call here
because
they have lost their way, but invariably say that they were glad they found us. We would
like to see you here, not because you have lost your way, but because you have followed
instructions on the directions page. You will be assured of a
warm welcome and the "crack" (local vernacular for conversation) is usually good. We are open 365 days a year, and are open all
day from 11 am. Families are most welcome and you will find ample parking space.
Looking
forward to seeing you.
Judy
and Ian.
